About BiafraAid Australia

BiafraAid Australia is an independent charity registered by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). The focus of the charity is the relief of poverty and access to healthcare for people of Biafran origin who live in Biafra Land. Whilst BiafraAid Australia is a charity for all Biafrans, we prioritise Biafrans who are suffering as a result of persecution and violence.

BiafraAid Australia was set up in 2022 in response to increasingly desperate need among Biafran people for financial aid and help with healthcare as a result of ongoing persecution by both the state of Nigeria and non-state actors such as Fulani herdsmen. We believe the aid will help those affected to live meaningful and prosperous lives.

Violent persecution typically leads to poverty and illness. Apart from the obvious needs of the Biafran people, who have suffered poverty through persistent historic and current persecution, the driving force behind the creation of BiafraAid Australia is the ongoing violence towards Biafran people and how this specifically has impacted on their lives, driving people from their homes, killing, injuring or maiming peaceful supporters of Biafran self-determination, who are often the major breadwinners for their families. When Biafran people are imprisoned and ‘disappeared’ by the Nigerian state, this often leaves dependents destitute, with no access to income, food or shelter.

BiafraAid Australia aims to help alleviate these problems wherever possible, to the very best of our ability.

Where BiafraAidAustralia Operates

BiafraAid Australia operates through Australia and Nigeria but mainly in Biafra Region (Eastern Region of Nigeria), the geographical area which seceded from the Nigerian Federation in 1967. Since the end of the Biafran War the people of Biafra Land have suffered hardships through persecution and marginalization which have created a unique set of issues and problems related to poverty and the provision of healthcare.

BiafraAid Australia aims to tackle those problems through working in partnership with groups and individuals on the ground in Biafra Region to help solve short-term crises as well as, in the future, provide long-term solutions.

What BiafraAidAustralia Does And How BiafraAidAustralia Works

BiafraAid Australia will primarily operate through a system of existing partnerships on the ground in Biafra Land. Partners will help us to identify those most in need, and it is through them that we will be able to make grants and, where necessary, provide ongoing income to help people through the worst of their difficulties.

BiafraAid Australia will maintain ongoing relationships with its beneficiaries to help ensure they are able to live independent lives.

In the future BiafraAid Australia’s support may include sponsoring education, training and reskilling programs to help beneficiaries generate their own income, as well as making grants to enable the establishment of small business ventures.

Over the longer-term BiafraAid Australia aims to provide the tools needed to enable all Biafrans, not just victims of persecution, to live independent and fulfilled lives in dignity.
